Circuit Training

Reading time: 1.5 minutes

You will have noticed in this week’s session that the format of your workout has changed slightly. This is a ‘circuit’ session. Circuit training is defined as ‘a consecutive series of exercises performed one after the other with varying amounts of rest between each exercise.’

Through previous weeks we have given an exercise which you complete, rest, and repeat. However, over the next two weeks we are going to increase the intensity slightly and push you to try and perform a number of exercises back to back with little rest until the circuit is complete. We have included this in the programme to overload* your system and continue the fitness progression you will have already experienced. Besides this, there are a number of benefits of circuit training:

  • It improves muscular endurance

  • It increases strength

  • It keeps your heart rate up for longer, improving your heart health

  • It is time efficient

  • It provides variety

We hope you enjoy the circuit sessions and feel the benefits!

*The overload principle is one of the big laws of fitness and training. Simply put, it says that you have to increase the intensity, duration, type, or time of a workout progressively in order to see adaptations.
